Swinging a light- weight object is critical to teaching your body how to speed up and move faster. Many of my students believe that swinging a weighted club is good for speed, but they are wrong. That builds golf muscles, which isn’t a bad thing. Unfortunately, it only teaches you to swing slower.
It’s the practice of moving weight to positions in the clubhead where it can best improve performance: distance, accuracy, or even feel. We know that, in general, the heavier a club head is the more energy it can transfer to a golf ball if the clubhead speed remains the same or very close to the same.
The scale ranges anywhere from A0 (the lightest) to G10 (the heaviest), but most men’s golf clubs fall in the range of C7 to D7. Two grams may not seem like a lot of weight, but that’s about how much weight difference is required to change one full swing weight point.
Simply put, heavier heads create more ball speed given the same swing speed which is why you see so many manufacturers making their club heads heavier. While the differences weren’t as dramatic as they were with speed, swing weight did have an impact on each player’s launch and spin conditions.

By completing overspeed training , while you may swing the club faster, you will not improve your ability to jump, squat, deadlift or sprint faster. It is a very isolated and specific way to increase speed in a swinging motion. This is why overspeed training isn’t a fix-all for every golfer .
If your club shafts are too stiff , you’ ll have trouble loading them properly during your downswing. When the clubhead gets to the ball, the shaft won’t unload properly and the face will remain slightly open, causing a slice .
Driver shafts typically weigh 55-60 grams for men and 45-50 grams for ladies. Iron shafts can be as light as 55 grams in graphite, and 130 grams in steel. The professional tours offer great examples. LPGA driver shafts are typically 50 to 65 grams while the PGA Tour driver shafts are 60 to 85 grams.
