Among other things, the club should rest flat behind the ball. It should be held by the golfer with hands flowing straight down from the shoulders. The knees should be comfortably bent and the upper body tilted forward and straight. The right hand being lower than the left will put the shoulders on an upward slope.
Here’s the secret : Gravity creates constant acceleration. If you swing the club downward, it automatically accelerates. The problem is that most people stop the club when it hits the ball. Don’t hit at the ball; swing through it.
Place the butt of the club on the tip of your thumb. That space — from the top of your thumb to your belt buckle — represents how far your body should be from the end of the club. From that position you can simply place the club on the ground behind the ball to achieve the proper stance.
The hips initiate the downswing . At the top of the backswing, the hips have turned back, away from the ball and the target. On the way down, they will turn back and face the target directly. The rotation of them will result in the front hip (left for a right-handed player) bumping, or lifting forward and up in the air.
That makes the swing plane way too flat and forces the player to re-route the club dramatically to even hit the ball. The wrists shouldn’t roll sideways. They hinge by moving up and down. Try this: Hold the club out in front of you , and hinge it upward as if you were going to tap your nose.

Use the big muscles of your legs and trunk to move the little muscles of your arms and hands. So watch the players at impact – they are all the same – and that is the most important part of any golf swing .
The erratic tempo is due to hitting solely with your arms and trying to blast every shot as hard as you can. In your golf swing , your arms move relatively fast compared to your body rotation. The odds of you being able to replicate the exact same hitting motion with your arms is impossible.
How to get better at golf without lessons You can’t avoid practice. The right way to practice. Practice one-armed golf swings at home. A mirror is your friend. Practice shots from 100-yards in. Pre-swing is often the starting point for problems. Avoid swing changes during round. The power of process goals.
You should pull the butt of the club toward the ball. Remember, this pulling down is done by the left arm . They not only pull the club into position but they must keep pulling all the way through the swing until the left hand is hip-high on the follow-through.
The ball should be positioned forward in the stance therefore you DO NOT start with your hands ahead of the ball at set up. Because the ball is on a tee, the driver will hit the ball on the upswing and your hands will be in the middle of your body at impact. Your hands will not be forward at impact with the driver !
