SES Small Edison Screw E14 Base Light Bulbs & Lamps The small Edison Screw bulb lamp is a smaller version of the E27 , measuring 14mm across the cap diameter.
An E14 bulb is one of the most used bulbs in our homes today and is also called the bulb with the small screw socket. It is the little brother of the E27 bulb that we know as the old-fashioned light bulb . The bulb is called E14 because it refers to the socket: 14 millimeter diameter.
A ‘standard’ ES (Edison screw ) bulb is also known as E27, which you might see on some light bulb boxes. The other most common screw-in bulb for the home is the E14 or SES ( Small Edison Screw ). This, as you will have correctly guessed has a 14mm diameter screw cap.
E14 bulbs are the ones with a screw base. Don’t get them confused with E27 bulbs, which have a screw base too, but are wider for larger fittings – you can see an example below.

This is made even worse with small screw caps where there are only a few millimetres difference between the sizes. E10, E12 and E14 bulbs – what’s the difference?
|Screw Cap Name||Diameter in Millimetres|
The ’14’ suffix of ‘ E14 ‘ refers to the exact diameter of the bulb. For this bulb it’s 14mm; one of the smaller bases you can purchase this bulb in. However, the ‘ E27 ‘ has a larger 27mm diameter base as indicated by the ’27’ suffix. You’ll also come across ‘B15’ and ‘B22’ bulbs in which the ‘B’ denotes a ‘Bayonet’ base.
Is e14 the same as e12?
|Designation||Base major diameter (thread external)||Name|
|E12||12 mm||Candelabra Edison Screw (CES), C7|
|E14||14 mm||Small Edison Screw (SES)|
|E17||17 mm||Intermediate Edison Screw (IES), C9|
|E26||26 mm||[Medium] (one-inch) Edison Screw (ES or MES)|
What is a B22 LED bulb ? B22 bulbs have the classic bayonet base fitting, which features two ‘mounts’ on either side of the bulb . This is also known as a ‘standard’ bayonet fitting and is the most common in the UK. Make sure you don’t get confused with B15 bayonet fittings that are smaller and less common.
Once again the LED light bulb with the B22 socket is a simple push and twist to fit, whereas the LED light bulb with the Edison E27 socket is a screw in fit. Use of such socket types for desk, bedside or decorative table lamps are being phased out due to this danger.
In countries that use 220–240 Volt AC domestic power, standard -size E27 and small E14 are the most common screw-mount sizes and are prevalent throughout continental Europe and China. In 120-Volt North America, 100-Volt Japan and 110-Volt Taiwan, the standard size for general-purpose lamps is E26.
The E27 bulb is one of the most common bulb we have in our homes today. It’s also known as the Edison bulb with big screw socket (27 millimeters). E27 refers to the socket, the fastening which you screw into your lighting appliance.
