Only five golfers have won all four of golf’s modern majors at any time during their careers, an achievement which is often referred to as a Career Grand Slam: Gene Sarazen , Ben Hogan , Gary Player , Jack Nicklaus , and Tiger Woods .
Just to recap, a golf Grand Slam is the unofficial term used to describe a golfer who wins all four major championships in a calendar year. In the modern era, the Grand Slam requires victories at the US Masters , the US Open , The Open Championship and the PGA Championship .
The only golfer to win a calendar- year grand slam was Bobby Jones in 1930. And that was considered, in Jones’ time, the single-season grand slam . Other than Jones, Tiger Woods has come closest to a single-season grand slam . In 2000, Woods won the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship.
Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth are in elite company with names like Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson and Tom Watson. McIlroy and Mickelson would prefer to leave this group, though. All of these players have won three of golf’s four majors .

Has an amatuer ever won a golf major ? No amateur has ever won the PGA Championship, as the field is limited to professionals. But back to the Open. Though it has been 85 years since an amateur won the Claret Jug, 2013 U.S. Open champion Justin Rose had one of the best British Open finish since Jones by an amateur .
The Open is the most prestigious golf tournament of them all. The reason that someone ranked 396th hasn’t won the Masters is because they wouldn’t be allowed to even attempt to qualify.

Tiger Woods won his first major , the Masters, in 1997, and he closed out the last decade adding to his 15 major victories at the same tournament. The Masters victory achieved another solid accomplishment: it silenced the critics who said the 44-year-old Woods would never win another major .
USGA Rule 3-1, “Playing for Prize Money ,” states that an amateur golfer cannot play for money in a golf match, exhibition or other competition such as a tournament. The USGA offers one exception to the rule. Amateurs can keep prize money for winning a hole-in-one contest during the course of a tournament.
