Unlike stroke play , in which the unit of scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf , match play scoring consists of individual holes won, halved or lost. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved.

When a player is up ( winning ) by more holes than there are holes remaining, then the match is won. This is when you see the final score of 3&2 for example. That means three holes up with two holes to play. The other player cannot win in this case.
If putts are conceded when appropriate, a round of match play is generally quicker than a round of stroke play . The bottom line is that your pro is correct. You are not entitled to putt continuously in match play . Mark your ball and wait your turn.
